From Struggles to Spikes: The Stories Behind the Wolfpack Players

Recently, I had a chance to sit with two passionate volleyball players, Rylan Ibbetson and Trey Soondarsingh, to discuss their personal and professional journeys on and off the volleyball court. Rylan, 22, from Kelowna, has been playing volleyball for five years, while Trey,20, proudly represents the Wolfpack for the past three years. Both athletes spoke passionately about how volleyball has shaped them as people, not just as players.

Rylan described how the five years in the sport taught him discipline, leadership, and resilience. He reflected on early struggles, the endless hours of training, and how the moments helped him grow stronger in mind and body. He also mentioned the tragic accident where TRU Wolfpack players were died which happend 3 years ago. Trey, with three years of competitive experience, spoke to the excitement of representing his team and a powerful sense of teamwork and support that comes from being part of the Wolfpack family. He emphasized how every game is a lesson, whether it ends in victory or defeat.

Some of the thoughts and experiences described by both of them were the same, as both players spoke to teamwork, commitment, and learning from mistakes. However, their views also showed some differences because Rylan brought into focus leadership and long-term growth, whereas Trey shared the energy and motivation of a new player still building up his path in the sport. The differences in their reflections underline that every new phase within an athlete’s career brings a new lesson and emotion.

And they shared heart touching memories-from unforgettable victories to defeats that had tested their determination and reflected their consistency. They also gave some very thought-provoking advice to the young athletes: never give up, stay patient, and always play with heart.

The interview wrapped up on a high note as Rylan and Trey invited fans to come out and watch their next matches and to cheer them  at TCC (Tournament Capital Centre). Their words remind us that behind every serve and spike, years of dedication, hard work, and passion lie therein-the true spirit of the game.

Balancing Books and the Ball: How New TRU Student-Athlete Luca Cupello Manages It All

Interview by Lameya Hossain Puspita

Starting university is never easy — new classes, new friends, and a new lifestyle to adjust to. But for 18-year-old Luca Cupello, a first-year psychology student at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) and a proud member of the TRU WolfPack men’s soccer team, the challenge is even greater. Starting student and athletic life together is a hard choice to make. He’s not only navigating the academic and social pressures of university life but also representing his hometown Kamloops on the field.

For Luca, every day begins early. “I usually wake up around 6 a.m. for morning practice,” he says. After training, he heads straight to class, balancing his demanding and hard psychology coursework with a busy athletic schedule. “It’s definitely hard sometimes, especially being new to everything,” he admits. “But I’m learning how to manage my time better every day,” Luca said. He is getting help from coach and teachers to do well in both ground and exam.

Despite the packed schedule, Luca stays grounded thanks to a strong support system. His family, friends, teammates, and coaches play a big role in helping him keep balance. “My family is my biggest motivation,” Luca shares. “They’ve supported me since I started playing sports. Having that encouragement helps me push through tough days.” As he is staying with his family he gets enough time to spend with his family. Mostly he prefer to do volunteer work towards the community. “In my free time I go to the community work with my friends, it gives me a different type of peace,” Luca said.

Interestingly, soccer wasn’t always his main sport. Luca once played hockey, but over time, he discovered his true passion for soccer. “I realized that soccer is what I really love. It gives me energy, motivation, and joy,” he says with a smile. this is something which people should know about a boy who is just 18 now.

During one of TRU WolfPack’s recent games, Luca’s enthusiasm was clear as he cheered on his team’s victory. “Seeing my team win reminds me why I do this,” he says. “It’s hard work, but the feeling of success makes it worth it.” As a first-year student-athlete, Luca understands the unique pressures that come with balancing academics and sports. He hopes his experience can inspire others. “It’s not easy, but it’s not impossible either,” he says. “If you really care about what you’re doing, you’ll find a way to manage everything. Passion makes everything easier.” Luca’s advice to other students or athletes thinking about joining TRU WolfPack is powerful: stay organized, stay motivated, and lean on your support system. “You don’t have to do it all alone,” he says. “The coaches and teammates here are really supportive. If you want it, you can do it.” said Luca.

For Luca Cupello, this first year is just the beginning — a year of learning, growth, and determination. His journey reminds us that with passion, discipline, and support, balancing life as a new university student and athlete is not only possible but deeply rewarding. He is confident about his goal and wants to achieve it. As Luca continues his journey at TRU, the work ethic are paving the way for both academic and athletic success. For him, it’s not just about playing the game; it’s about becoming the best version of himself, on and off the field.
